    Description

A superb watercolor from British sporting artist Charles Whymper (1853-1941). The painting is a beautiful character study of a donkey, not a pack animal, but one saddled for riding.
Good sized, the image measures 12 x 16 inches. It is signed by the artist in the lower right corner and was painted on watercolour board. The paper has toned with age and it shows a mat line around the image, otherwise in fine condition and should frame up beautifully.
Charles Whymper (1853-1941) was a London born British painter and illustrator. His father, Josiah Wood Whymper (1813-1903), was a well-known painter and engraver. Charles was educated at the Royal Academy Schools. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors, the New Gallery, and the Fine Art Society, London. In 1909 Whymper was elected to the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolors. He was a prolific book illustrator specializing in travel, animal, and hunting themes and contributed to The Illustrated London News, Good Words, and The English Illustrated Magazine. Whymper died on 25 April 1941.
